I've went to dine at Kim Gary restaurants before but always at peak times and found the queue too long to justify the wait in a shopping mall (Queensbay Mall) spoiled for choice with delightful eateries.

Many of my friends have encouraged me to eat there as they all thought I would love the Cheese Baked Rice dishes they serve. Reading online comments on Kim Gary restaurant it seems opinion is divided and rather like marmite it appears you either love their food or hate it.

So with the wife away on the mainland on business I ventured down to Queensbay Mall alone and before the peak evening dining times so ensuring there were no dreadful queues to suffer.

I already knew I wanted to try the baked rice and this is the food I ordered:

Cheese Baked Rice With Beef - RM15.50
Supreme Beef Curry Baked Rice With Swiss Cheese - RM14.90
Chocolate Snow Mellow - RM5.50
Green Tea (Hot) - RM2.50
Service Charge 10% - RM3.84
Tax 6% - RM2.30
Total Bill - RM44.55

I am a total cheese fan and I love trying new dishes that put to good use this wonderful dairy product so I was licking my lips in anticipation of a Hong Kong fusion food delight.

First up was the superbly named Supreme Beef Curry Baked Rice With Swiss Cheese, but would it take me to culinary heaven or culinary hell?

This was a basic curry taste that was quite flavoursome and the added cheese definitely enhanced the taste sensation for me. An added bonus I was not expecting were the added vegetable and potatoes as anyone who knows me will understand that I like a balanced diet and these are essential to achieve that aim.

The Supreme Beef Curry Baked Rice With Swiss Cheese was good but I cannot enthuse myself enough to find the superlatives I initially thought I would be bestowing on this dish.

The Cheese Baked Rice With Beef was next and it had me drooling at first sight so I hurriedly snapped some photos in hopeful anticipation that it could deliver what its look threatened, a great taste sensation.

This dish also came adorned with added vegetables with fresh Broccoli, Tomatoes and Green Peppers with the added bonus of some Pineapple chunks.

This Cheese Baked Rice With Beef was much much better than the Supreme Baked Cheese dish as the curry really hit the mark with a marvellous flavour.

Green peppers and Tomatoes suit a curry dish and with the pineapples adding that sweet taste I found I was getting many different taste sensations in just one serving of what is a great dish.

Melted cheese is fantastic on many dishes and it did not disappoint with my taste buds being given a fantastic gustatory sensation with every mouthful I ate. I would definitely recommend this dish to anyone contemplating dining at any Kim Gary restaurant.

I'm not really a 'dessert' type person but I thought I would try the Chocolate Snow Mellow as the photo was enticing and the name suggested it would not be over the top.

The rich chocolate drizzled over the shaved coconut base was actually quite tasty even to me and I managed to eat far more of this than I thought I would. But as I am no connoisseur of sweet desserts I'm unsure if that is any kind of substantial endorsement of this dish.

I was quite full at this stage as the meal also came with a complimentary plate of steamed rice that I mixed in with the earlier two dishes.

Overall I was quite pleased with dining on an east meets west menu of Hong Kong fusion food at Kim Gary restaurant in Penang.
